Do you look at the Message of the Day (MOTD) if you experience an unusual problem with your Internet connection? This Web page should be book marked if not made the home page for members who use Melb PC as their ISP. The MOTD page at http://www.melbpc.org.au/motd/ or https://wss.melbpc.org.au/motd/ (these are secure webpages for members only) contain useful and current information for members about our Internet service. Treat it as a notice board that you view on the way in. At the time of writing, our usually highly reliable Internet service had developed an intermittent fault that prevented mail being sent. Mail could be received throughout this period. Previously we had installed a service to enable members who travel to send and receive their e-mail via a Web-based mail reader and not only was this mentioned on the MOTD but a link to that service was provided. The service can now be found via a link on the main Melb PC home page. Home Pages As a part of your Internet subscription you are entitled to 10 MB of storage to enable you to put up your own home page that can be seen by anyone in the world. Many members have applied for this but many have not put up any pages. Some others have put up their home pages but have not changed their default description on the index page, http://member.melbpc.org.au/homepages-by-surname.html. If your title is shown as: "Home Page for smith" this means the Web page software you used to create your page has not added the Title tag. In order to have the title of your home page displayed correctly you must add one line of HTML code into the file index.html. This line must begin with <title> and end with </title> as shown here
You can still use the private folder for your offsite backup. This folder is NOT accessible via any browser and cannot be located by search engines. For additional security files can be encrypted. We're meeting at a New Location! September Meeting is on Wednesday 3rd, starting at 7:00 pm sharp. In a city as big as Melbourne with a group as widespread and diverse as ours there is never a perfect place to meet. Pharmacy College is great for inner-city dwellers; Besen Centre is great for those who live in the east. Well now, because we have to find a new location for September, November and December, we have chosen Melbourne University's Hawthorn Campus in Auburn Road. It's close to the Toorak Road exit of the Monash Freeway, has a hall big enough for our meetings, plus good parking on the grounds. New Frontiers in Chip Technology Intel is the company whose technology is a main driving force in the computer revolution. If you think the current chips are fast, you should come and hear what they have in store for the coming years. Can You Save Those Lost Discs? Programs, music, DVDs can be rendered useless because of scratched or damaged CDs. A local developer has devised a way to rescue your discs and restore them to life. It's called DiscDoctor and Debby Shay will come along to show us how it works. How do PC Buyers Behave? This is a serious study by post-graduate Ken Wright to find out what different users look for when they buy computers. You, our audience, will be the subjects. Have you been to a monthly meeting yet? You don't know what you're missing. There's information and fun, entertainment and many prizes plus opportunities to socialise and meet new friends. The meeting will also have our Random Access session (your chance to ask the experts). Plus Prizes Prizes Prizes! Bring your membership card so that you will be eligible for raffle prizes. It's a great night. Don't miss it! Reprinted from the September 2003 issue of PC Update, the magazine of Melbourne PC User Group, Australia
