Hello and welcome to our very first edition of the new PC Update! Whilst I have
no intention of regularly taking up valuable word space each month that can be better utilised,
I felt it important in this first edition at least, that I make you acquainted
with who I am and the fabulous team behind me who will be putting PC Update
together.
A few people may know me as the owner, publisher and editor of AusCam
(Australasian Camcorder) magazine, a publication born out of the demise of Peter
Blasina's (The Gadget Guy on Channel 7) VideoCamera magazine of which I was
Managing Editor. Prior to this I had a stint as editor of Free Access magazine
and before that, a long term position as contributing editor for Digital Media
World magazine.
As well as this, since 1980-something, I have been a freelancer in IT, gadgets
and my passion, motor sport, for such publications as PC User, APC, PC Magazine,
PC World, The
Australian, Sydney Morning Herald, The Age, the Gold Coast Bulletin, Australian
Reseller and many more.
I have also had radio shows on Triple M, 2GB and Radio Northern Beaches as well
as being appointed as the technical consultant to the TV show "Blue Water High".
As such,
it is fair to say I've been around!
Indeed, I was at the forefront of the PC revolution, running a Tandy Computer
Centre in WA (where I'm based) from 1979 to 1984 during those heady days of TRS
(Trash) 80 models 1, 2, 3, 4, 12, 16 and CoCo!
I then "defected" to the big bad IBM (well Olivetti M24) world and then jumped
ship again three years later into distribution where I had a software company
called 'Solutions' based on the Gold Coast.
And nary an Apple in sight ...
The team alongside me is equally if not more "worldly wise" in the way of The
Computer, with subeditor Paul Zucker having much
more technical hands on and writing experience than I, finished art whiz
Ian Yates is very well known as a long standing IT journalist, and
contributors Anthony Caruana, JV Douglas, Darren Yates and Helen Bradley are all
firmly established in their respective fields of IT reporting.
Of course George Skarbek and Adam Turner are already well known to PC Update
readers
as are the regular member contributions from people such as Major Keary, Ash
Nallawalla, John Swale, Ross Alcock and so on.
The new design of PC Update is from the very capable hands of Leanne Hunt (who
also
designs AusCam and is a not too shabby photographer either).
Other photography is from
a long standing mate of mine,
Melbourne-based Ross Gibb, who is truly one of the world's very best and
especially makes his mark
as a motor sports snapper.
Please be assured we'll love to hear from you regarding any aspect of PC Update
- all brickbats and bouquets are welcome at any time.
All I ask is that through the initial transition period you have a bit of
patience as this publishing lark has lots of variables that are
sometimes totally out of our control.
To contact me or the team, please send an email to
editor@melbpc.org.au or via

Finally, we are very proud to be on board and assure you, we will be doing our
very best each month to bring you a publication your club can be proud of.
