Unfortunately last month we weren't able to get the first edition of the
new-look PC
Update to you on time. We apologise for any inconvenience this caused and hope
by now that you are enjoying the new format and variety of content in the first
two issues.
Judging by early comments (as I write this column) the feedback
is great! Of course there were a few members who were extremely upset by not
receiving their copies on time, and we apologise to them. We were always
confident that you would enjoy the end result and particularly the mix of
content and variety in articles, so now it's onwards and upwards.
To add to the variety, I encourage you to think about whether you might be able
to contribute to the magazine by way of an article.
How do you use your computer? Do you take pictures for use on eBay? Need to
re-size images
for "Facebook" or other social networking sites? Provide content for blogs or
web sites? Do you compile a regular newsletter?
How do you find new sites - have you found any really good "freebies" recently?
What are some of the trials, tribulations and successes you experience in the
daily use of your PC? We'd love to hear about them - after all they say there's
a book in everyone!
We don't want a book, but a small article might be nice! Think about it - you
could share your experiences with others and save them some of the hassles. Send
us your articles, feedback and suggestions - we look forward to them - as
always.
The new look PC Update will be added to our on-line editions at
www.melbpc.org.au/pcupdate.
Articles from all issues dating back to 1984 are available for you to browse and
read on-line.
Committee vacancies
Your committee started the year without a vice president and the position has
remained a casual vacancy ever since. Recently
I have also, with much regret, accepted the resignations of both the treasurer,
Ang Ung, and Ash Nallawalla because of ill health.
We wish Ang a full recovery and thank him for the work he has done in his time
as treasurer. We also wish Ash all the best
for the future and thank him for the enormous contribution he has made to the
Melb PC Group as a whole over many years.
Dave Botherway stepped in as temporary replacement for Ang and this has been
much appreciated, however he can't continue in the role. We now have two casual
executive vacancies and one casual committee vacancy to fill. Having three
vacancies places an extra burden on committee members and therefore we would
like to fill the positions as soon as possible.
Although you need to put the time into offering to volunteer in this way, there
are rewards too. Seeing your ideas come to fruition, using the skills you have
developed over the years and learning new ones, knowing you are contributing to
managing an ever-changing organisation and working with other volunteers to
achieve things - can all be very rewarding.
If you are interested in applying for either of these roles, please contact me
or John Swale to discuss the positions further.
Committee experience, management and/or finance skills and a desire to
contribute to the work of this successful PC user group would be highly
regarded.
All contact will be
treated confidentially.
Changes for the better
At a recent meeting of the Internet Admin Team and the Management Committee it
was decided to create a new "Internet Users" information web page.
This page will replace the current MOTD, which has become a repository for ad
hoc links and any information that committee or the admin team think necessary
to share with members. We need to change this situation and our webmaster has
agreed to spearhead the project.
The name of the new page has yet to be agreed but its purpose will be to provide
our Internet users with more focused information
and links. This will be an interim service until the new web site is fully
developed and implemented. We hope you will enjoy the change.
Another change we are making is to increase web space allocation for our
internet subscribers to
20 MB, upon application. Web space will remain at 10 MB for associate members.
If you wish to apply for extra web space please contact the office.
Your committee welcomes the chance to provide you with more information (please
read www.melbpc.org.au/committee/ regularly for committee reports). We also
welcome all feedback - contact
me at president@melbpc.org.auor the
office on (03) 9567 8000.
