Interest Groups
Melb PC recently gave the green light to members Henry Craven and David Benet to
convene an Interest Group of IT professionals, that will meet at Chadstone. Most
of the founding- group provide IT support services to small and medium sized
businesses and getting together on a regular basis is a great way to share
common issues.
"SMB IT Specialists" as the group will be known, will hold their first meeting
at Melb PC in January 2009. Meetings will be held on the last Wednesday of each
month (excluding December) and details will be published in PC Update over the
coming months.
The group's aim is to provide peer support, professional development and
networking opportunities for IT professionals who support both Small and Medium
Business (SMB) and also Small and Medium Enterprise.
There are also many Melb PC members who work in IT or related roles, who might
benefit from attending the new group. Henry and David both have a lot of energy
and
commitment to give to the group and the agendas are starting to be created! The
inception of this group will undoubtedly enable Melb PC to create new marketing
initiatives aimed at attracting the small / medium business computer user and
those who wish to find out more about business server applications and
technologies.
Small business owners know only too well that they have to be all things to all
- accountants and tax experts, marketers and advertisers, record keepers,
computer technicians and much more. The potential for this new Interest Group to
spin off other SMB-related interest groups is huge.
We're very pleased that our Interest Groups continue to grow and provide forums
for members who want to find out about the latest technology, share knowledge
about computers and ask questions about their specific needs. If you'd like to
be part of this exciting new group, contact Henry and David at
smbits@melbpc.org.au.
TAFE Project
Last month I reported that work had begun on a project aimed at encouraging TAFE
students to participate in Interest Group meetings. Holmesglen TAFE have
responded to our Melb PC contact, Michael Andrus and they're keen to know more
about the project. They're willing to place Melb PC information in the student
areas at the TAFE so we can get maximum exposure. They believe that their
students will be able to gain valuable experience by working with us to assist
in providing technical support (iHelp) to our members.
We'll be following up on this initial contact during next month.
