Recently I was on vacation in the United States with trey family and met up with an old friend who is a user group officer. He said that he will never use a modem again to surf the Web. I He now leas an ADSL connection to the Internet for just US$40 per month. It didn't even need new wiring as it comes through his exiting phone line. See www.bell-atl.com/adsl/more_info/faq.html for some information about ADSL I know others who are paying a similar amount to their phone companies for fast Internet access. While this is great for Web surfers. I suspect it does not bode well for small ISPs This is a technology to watch.

Go September

When Mr B received the September issue of PC Update (that black-and-white effort), he wrote to the Secretary and asked not to be sent any more junk mail.

The reason why that issue was so Spartan is that Ziff Davis was going to produce that issue and, for reasons that became apparent later, we realised that we had to produce it ourselves if we were to get it to you in time We simply could not wait for ZD to do it. For the benefit of people like Mr B, most of us who run this user group do so on an honorary basis, namely for no money and in our "spare time". I can drive Corel Ventura and Adobe PageMaker, but 1 simply did not leave the luxury of time for that issue.

Trust me; we do not deliberately set out to create junk mail. As that issue contained only Group news, I imagine that Mr B is one of those members who don't care for the "users helping users" foundation of this group.

Thanks, Gary Taig!

As you would have noted in the October Guest Editorial my fellow Life Member, Gary Taig has come to the rescue while the tender subcommittee evaluates the proposals from potential magazine producers. Gary has generously volunteered to produce the magazines until the last edition of this year. While some postured and criticised the September issue in the newsgroups and in e-mail, Gary delivered the bacon. Thankyou, Gary!

Quite appropriately several readers have commented favourably on the October issue produced by Gary.
